Everything you need to know about height adjustable consoles

At Thinking Space, we have seen an increase in demand for electric height adjustable consoles over the last year, so we bring you everything you need to know about height adjustable consoles.

The rise in requirement can be found in all sectors, including Air Traffic and Transport sectors, not just limited to security control rooms. Our own staff too are requesting the ability to practice sit-stand working to reduce upper back and neck pain, as well as improving mood, posture and productivity within the office.

What appeals is the ability for an employee to be able to control their own workspace quickly, quietly and effectively, to maintain comfort.

In control room environments, operators are working longer shift patterns and often in stressful and intensive situations. For an operator to perform their role effectively, they must be comfortable and in control of their surroundings. After all, we are all different, so why shouldn’t we be able to adapt our working environment accordingly?

Which is why our console solutions offer individual height adjustment as an option.

Height adjustable consoles not only allow the operator the chance to alter the height for their own comfort, they can also adopt sit-stand working practices, where a myriad of studies have shown health benefits to include :-

  • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes
  • Improving moods
  • Reduces stress
  • Improving alertness
  • Reduces muscle tension and fatigue
  • Improving reach area so less likely to overstretch and cause injury
  • Strengthening core muscles
  • Improving focus and productivity levels
  • However, the important factor is that movement is key rather than the standing up, as standing for long periods is not good for us either.

All our technical furniture designs are specifically created with the operator in mind, with each piece of technical furniture custom designed to your requirements.

The height adjustment for control room consoles is electrically operated. The solution not only meets DDA regulations but also allows each operator control over the height of the working area giving them freedom of choice for sit-stand working routines.

At the gentle nudge of the paddle found at the front of the desk, the height of their desk area can be adjusted smoothly, with an anti-collision mechanism which prevents the entrapment of fingers etc.

A further important point is that by using our electric height adjustment solution, the activity of raising and lowering the desk is quiet. This eliminates the risk of disrupting others at work, which could be critical in certain environments such as Air Traffic.

Managing Director Wayne Palmer demonstrates our latest height adjustable desk solution in this video:

Our custom designed consoles provide various options for adjusting your worktop height:

  • complete desk actuation so that the whole desk surface can be raised and lowered
  • partial desk actuation, where the front section can be raised and lowered, leaving the rear section static
  • partial desk actuation for multi-operator consoles, where the front section of each operators’ working area can be adjusted
  • seperate front and rear worktop height adjustment, ideal where sight lines are critical
  • We also offer full worktop height adjustment for other technical furniture solutions provided by subsidiary company Kanya UK, including mobile height adjustable workbenches for industrial workspaces. These provide efficient working, packing and assembly for factories and production lines.

Our solutions use caterpillar tracks which take all cabling from the cable baskets up to the desk surface safely without any risk of damaging the cables, deeming them unsafe.

Our animation video below explains how the height adjustment and cable management features interact with each other to ensure a smooth height adjustment process.

As well as a control paddle on the worktop which is easy to use with programmable memory settings and logos to add to the paddle display, we now offer the ability to control the height of your desk with remote and desktop software.

The desktop programme software can be installed on your PC or Mac and contains the typical desk panel features such as raise and lower, and up to 3 pre-set memory positions, all controllable from your computer.

In addition, pop up boxes remind you to adjust your desk, counting the standing time as well as calories burned. You have full control over the intervals so that your routine is specific to you.

An app is also available for iOS and Android devices, which gives each operator control over their desk remotely via bluetooth.

With the ability to sit and stand at your workspace, you may be mistaken for thinking that your chair is no longer important.

The performance of your chair is a must, even if you are not sitting for longer periods than you used to. An ergonomic chair will provide lower back support and give the user the correct sitting posture.

At Thinking Space, we offer a range of 3 different chairs, all suitable for 24/7 use and offering different characteristics and budgets for your working environment.

We also offer the Novus Pila seating ball, should you require an alternative healthy seating method. Again, not to replace your ergonomic chair, but the seating ball offers short term posture benefits and core stability in tandem with your chair and sit-stand working.

It is important to vary your position and move around, preferably three times an hour and at least once an hour. Instead of sitting for too long at a time, you can switch between the standing and sitting position, and remember, good posture is important too. Your body weight should be evenly distributed on both legs.

Consider your choice of footwear, as this will have an effect on your posture. Flooring will also play a part, and consideration should be given as early as possible for refurbishments and new build projects to provide flooring which is cushioned for underfoot support.

Here are our 5 tips to incorporate sit-stand working into your daily routine if you have a sit-stand desk or console. We also recommend regular standing for a break from sitting, whilst whilst we work from home during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
